The U.S. Census Bureau announces the December advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in December, down two of the last three months, decreased $4.6 billion or 1.4 percent to $319.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 5.4 percent November increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.9 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 2.5 percent. Transportation equipment, also down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $6.4 billion or 5.3 percent to $113.5 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in December, up three of the last four months, increased $3.0 billion or 1.0 percent to $311.5 billion. This followed a 0.3 percent November decrease. Transportation equipment, up two of the last three months, led the increase, $1.5 billion or 1.5 percent to $102.4 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in December, up seventeen of the last eighteen months, increased $13.2 billion or 0.9 percent to $1,527.2 billion. This followed a 1.4 percent November increase. Transportation equipment, up nine of the last ten months, led the increase, $11.0 billion or 1.2 percent to $960.6 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in December, up three consecutive months, increased $1.2 billion or 0.2 percent to $593.2 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent November increase. Machinery, up nine of the last ten months, led the increase, $0.4 billion or 0.4 percent to $104.1 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in December decreased $8.2 billion or 7.6 percent to $100.3 billion. Shipments increased $1.6 billion or 1.8 percent to $90.0 billion. Unfilled orders increased $10.3 billion or 1.1 percent to $912.3 billion. Inventories increased $0.6 billion or 0.3 percent to $249.1 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in December increased $3.4 billion or 22.2 percent to $18.9 billion. Shipments increased $0.4 billion or 2.7 percent to $16.8 billion. Unfilled orders increased $2.0 billion or 1.0 percent to $212.5 billion. Inventories decreased $0.1 billion or 0.2 percent to $27.7 billion. Revised November Data – Revised seasonally adjusted November figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $621.9 billion (revised from $621.6 billion); shipments, $606.1 billion (revised from $606.3 billion); unfilled orders, $1,514.0 billion (revised from $1,513.5 billion) and total inventories, $948.5 billion (revised from $948.4 billion).
