(by Kurt Minnich, www.pipe-logix.com) Line pipe prices declined 1% in January with domestic prices down 1.5% and import prices down 0.4%. This is the sixth month of price declines with a cumulative loss of 6% in the Pipe Logix Index. Distributor’s sentiment improved slightly but continues to signal a contracting market. The NASPD Index was 43, up from 36 the previous month and down from 81 a year ago. Reported data on import volumes has been delayed due to the government shutdown but estimates suggest import volumes were mostly flat through November and December while domestic shipments were lower. The rig count declined in January with oil prices averaging $50/bbl and natural gas just over $3/mmbtu.
