NATURAL GAS WEEKLY UPDATE (Week Ending 08-28-26)

Natural gas storage

Net injections into storage totaled 15 Bcf for the week ending August 21, compared with the five-year (2021–2025) average net injections of 33 Bcf and last year’s net injections of 17 Bcf during the same week. Working natural gas stocks totaled 3,184 Bcf as of Friday, August 21, 2026, according to EIA estimates. Stocks were 167 Bcf (6%) more than the five-year average and 30 Bcf (1%) lower than last year at this time. The average rate of injections into storage is 9% higher than the five-year average so far in the refill season (April through October). If the rate of injections into storage matched the five-year average of 10.4 Bcf/d for the remainder of the refill season, the total inventory would be 3,920 Bcf on October 31, which is 167 Bcf higher than the five-year average of 3,753 Bcf for that time of year.

Natural gas prices

The Henry Hub price decreased $0.13/MMBtu from $2.94/MMBtu last Wednesday to $2.81/MMBtu yesterday. Re gional temperatures in the United States varied sharply the past week as above-average temperatures in Texas and the Southwest were offset by cooler temperatures in the Mid-Continent and Northeast regions. Total demand decreased by 3.6 Bcf/d (3%), led by a 2.9 Bcf/d (6%) decrease in the electric power sector, according to S&P Global Energy. LNG feedgas also decreased by 0.4 Bcf/d (2%) amid ongoing maintenance at several key facilities. Total U.S. natural gas supply also fell by 0.9 Bcf/d (1%), with net Canadian imports decreasing by 0.4 Bcf/d (8%) and dry gas production decreasing by 0.4 Bcf/d (less than 1%).

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)

For the week ending August 26: The LNG-carrying capacity of vessels departing U.S. ports was 117 Bcf, down 12 Bcf from the previous week. Thirty-one LNG vessels left U.S. ports, down three vessels from the previous week. Seven vessels departed from Sabine Pass, six each from Corpus Christi and Plaquemines, four from Cameron, three each from Calcasieu Pass and Freeport, and one each from Cove Point and Elba Island.
