The U.S. Census Bureau announces the October advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in October, down following two consecutive monthly increases, decreased $6.8 billion or 2.2 percent to $307.4 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 0.7 percent September increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.2 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 1.5 percent. Transportation equipment, also down following two consecutive monthly increases, drove the decrease, $7.2 billion or 6.5 percent to $103.9 billion. Shipments -Shipments of manufactured durable goods in October, up ten of the last eleven months, increased $1.8 billion or 0.6 percent to $309.6 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent September increase. Transportation equipment, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, led the increase, $1.4 billion or 1.4 percent to $102.6 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in October, up fifteen of the last sixteen months, increased $2.7 billion or 0.2 percent to $1,492.8 billion. This followed a 0.8 percent September increase. Transportation equipment, up seven of the last eight months, led the increase, $1.2 billion or 0.1 percent to $930.2 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in October, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $0.8 billion or 0.1 percent to $590.5 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent September decrease. Machinery, up seven of the last eight months, led the increase, $0.3 billion or 0.3 percent to $103.3 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in October decreased $4.1 billion or 4.4 percent to $89.8 billion. Shipments increased $1.9 billion or 2.2 percent to $90.4 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.6 billion or 0.1 percent to $881.5 billion. Inventories increased $0.6 billion or 0.2 percent to $247.8 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in October decreased $2.2 billion or 11.3 percent to $17.7 billion. Shipments increased $0.2 billion or 1.4 percent to $15.9 billion. Unfilled orders increased $1.8 billion or 0.9 percent to $211.7 billion. Inventories decreased less than $0.1 billion or 0.2 percent to $27.1 billion. Revised September Data – Revised seasonally adjusted September figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $612.9 billion (revised from $612.6 billion); shipments, $606.6 billion (revised from $606.7 billion); unfilled orders, $1,490.1 billion (revised from $1,489.8 billion) and total inventories, $946.7 billion (revised from $946.8 billion).
