The U.S. Census Bureau announces the September advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in September, up six of the last seven months, increased $1.0 billion or 0.4 percent to $274.7 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 0.2 percent August increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.5 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 1.4 percent. Transportation equipment, up five of the last six months, drove the increase, $1.9 billion or 2.1 percent to $95.4 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in September, up sixteen of the last seventeen months, increased $0.7 billion or 0.3 percent to $274.2 billion. This followed a 1.3 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, up eleven of the last twelve months, drove the increase, $1.0 billion or 1.1 percent to $90.5 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in September, up twenty-five consecutive months, increased $5.6 billion or 0.5 percent to $1,137.5 billion. This followed a 0.5 percent August increase. Transportation equipment, up nineteen of the last twenty months, led the increase, $4.9 billion or 0.7 percent to $664.0 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in September, up twenty consecutive months, increased $1.2 billion or 0.2 percent to $488.7 billion. This followed a 0.3 percent August increase. Machinery, up twenty-three consecutive months, led the increase, $0.8 billion or 1.0 percent to $85.3 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in September increased $3.0 billion or 3.5 percent to $89.1 billion. Shipments decreased $0.5 billion or 0.6 percent to $82.6 billion. Unfilled orders increased $6.5 billion or 1.0 percent to $645.2 billion. Inventories increased $1.0 billion or 0.5 percent to $214.7 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in September decreased $2.6 billion or 15.8 percent to $13.8 billion. Shipments decreased $0.1 billion or 0.5 percent to $14.4 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.7 billion or 0.3 percent to $187.2 billion. Inventories decreased $0.2 billion or 1.0 percent to $22.5 billion. Revised August Data – Revised seasonally adjusted August figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $549.2 billion (revised from $548.4 billion); shipments, $549.0 billion (revised from $547.9 billion); unfilled orders, $1,131.9 billion (revised from $1,132.1 billion) and total inventories, $800.3 billion (revised from $800.2 billion).
