The U.S. Census Bureau announces the July advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in July, up five of the last six months, increased $26.1 billion or 9.9 percent to $289.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 6.9 percent June decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.2 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 10.4 percent. Transportation equipment, up two of the last three months, drove the increase, $26.4 billion or 34.8 percent to $102.2 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in July, up five of the last six months, increased $3.1 billion or 1.1 percent to $291.1 billion. This followed a 1.2 percent June increase. Transportation equipment, also up five of the last six months, drove the increase, $3.4 billion or 3.6 percent to $99.2 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in July, up forty-seven of the last forty-eight months, increased $3.3 billion or 0.2 percent to $1,386.5 billion. This followed a 1.4 percent June decrease. Transportation equipment, up forty-two of the last forty-three months, led the increase, $3.1 billion or 0.3 percent to $892.4 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in July, up three of the last four months, increased $0.7 billion or 0.1 percent to $529.7 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent June decrease. Transportation equipment, up eleven of the last twelve months, led the increase, $0.2 billion or 0.1 percent to $172.1 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in July increased $27.2 billion or 41.9 percent to $92.0 billion. Shipments increased $4.0 billion or 4.7 percent to $89.6 billion. Unfilled orders increased $2.4 billion or 0.3 percent to $839.9 billion. Inventories increased $0.4 billion or 0.2 percent to $232.7 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in July increased $0.2 billion or 1.2 percent to $15.0 billion. Shipments increased $0.6 billion or 4.4 percent to $14.7 billion. Unfilled orders increased $0.3 billion or 0.2 percent to $203.0 billion. Inventories decreased $0.1 billion or 0.4 percent to $25.6 billion. Revised June Data – Revised seasonally adjusted June figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $564.1 billion (revised from $564.2 billion); shipments, $588.5 billion (revised from $588.0 billion); unfilled orders, $1,383.3 billion (revised from $1,383.9 billion) and total inventories, $858.8 billion (revised from $859.2 billion).
