The U.S. Census Bureau announces the June advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in June, down two of the last three months, decreased $32.1 billion or 9.3 percent to $311.8 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 16.5 percent May increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.2 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 9.4 percent. Transportation equipment, also down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $32.6 billion or 22.4 percent to $113.0 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in June, up seven consecutive months, increased $1.4 billion or 0.5 percent to $302.5 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent May increase. Transportation equipment, up six of the last seven months, led the increase, $0.8 billion or 0.8 percent to $98.9 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in June, up eleven of the last twelve months, increased $14.4 billion or 1.0 percent to $1,470.0 billion. This followed a 3.4 percent May increase. Transportation quipment, up four consecutive months, led the increase, $14.1 billion or 1.6 percent to $911.9 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in June, up nine consecutive months, increased $0.9 billion or 0.2 percent to $588.6 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent May increase. Machinery, up four consecutive months, led the increase, $0.4 billion or 0.4 percent to $102.2 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in June decreased $31.4 billion or 24.0 percent to $99.3 billion. Shipments decreased $0.7 billion or 0.9 percent to $86.6 billion. Unfilled orders increased $12.8 billion or 1.5 percent to $871.6 billion. Inventories increased $0.2 billion or 0.1 percent to $249.8 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in June decreased $2.0 billion or 10.2 percent to $17.4 billion. Shipments increased $1.2 billion or 8.5 percent to $15.6 billion. Unfilled orders increased $1.8 billion or 0.9 percent to $205.4 billion. Inventories increased $0.2 billion or 0.6 percent to $26.8 billion. Revised May Data – Revised seasonally adjusted May figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $642.5 billion (revised from $642.0 billion); shipments, $599.6 billion (revised from $599.4 billion); unfilled orders, $1,455.6 billion (revised from $1,455.4 billion) and total inventories, $944.1 billion (unchanged).
