The U.S. Census Bureau announces the June advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in June, down following four consecutive monthly increases, decreased $18.6 billion or 6.6 percent to $264.5 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 0.1 percent May increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.5 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 7.0 percent. Transportation equipment, down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $19.6 billion or 20.5 percent to $75.8 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in June, up four of the last five months, increased $3.5 billion or 1.2 percent to $288.1 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent May decrease. Transportation equipment, also up four of the last five months, led the increase, $3.5 billion or 3.8 percent to $95.3 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in June, down following forty-six consecutive monthly increases, decreased $18.8 billion or 1.3 percent to $1,384.3 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent May increase. Transportation equipment, down following forty-one consecutive monthly increases, drove the decrease, $19.5 billion or 2.1 percent to $889.8 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in June, down following two consecutive monthly increases, decreased $0.1 billion or virtually unchanged to $529.4 billion. This followed a 0.2 percent May increase. Transportation equipment, down following ten consecutive monthly increases, drove the decrease, $0.2 billion or 0.1 percent to $172.0 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in June decreased $18.9 billion or 22.4 percent to $65.2 billion. Shipments increased $4.2 billion or 5.2 percent to $84.8 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $19.6 billion or 2.3 percent to $838.5 billion. Inventories decreased $0.3 billion or 0.1 percent to $232.4 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in June increased $0.8 billion or 6.1 percent to $14.6 billion. Shipments decreased $0.5 billion or 3.3 percent to $14.0 billion. Unfilled orders increased $0.6 billion or 0.3 percent to $202.5 billion. Inventories increased $0.2 billion or 0.7 percent to $25.7 billion. Revised May Data – Revised seasonally adjusted May figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $583.5 billion (revised from $583.1 billion); shipments, $584.9 billion (revised from $584.8 billion); unfilled orders, $1,403.0 billion (revised from $1,402.8 billion) and total inventories, $859.5 billion (revised from $860.1 billion).
