The U.S. Census Bureau announces the May advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in May, up four consecutive months, increased $0.3 billion or 0.1 percent to $283.1 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 0.2 percent April increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.1 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 0.2 percent. Transportation equipment, up three of the last four months, drove the increase, $0.5 billion or 0.6 percent to $95.4 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in May, down following three consecutive monthly increases, decreased $1.0 billion or 0.3 percent to $284.7 billion. This followed a 1.2 percent April increase. Transportation equipment, also down following three consecutive monthly increases, led the decrease, $0.8 billion or 0.8 percent to $92.0 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in May, up forty-six consecutive months, increased $3.1 billion or 0.2 percent to $1,402.8 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent April increase. Transportation equipment, up forty-three of the last forty-four months, drove the increase, $3.4 billion or 0.4 percent to $909.1 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in May, up five of the last six months, increased $1.5 billion or 0.3 percent to $530.1 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent April increase. Transportation equipment, up eleven of the last twelve months, led the increase, $1.1 billion or 0.7 percent to $172.3 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in May decreased $0.8 billion or 0.9 percent to $83.6 billion. Shipments decreased $1.2 billion or 1.5 percent to $80.6 billion. Unfilled orders increased $3.1 billion or 0.4 percent to $857.7 billion. Inventories increased $1.4 billion or 0.6 percent to $233.0 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in May increased $0.3 billion or 1.9 percent to $13.7 billion. Shipments increased $0.1 billion or 0.6 percent to $14.5 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.8 billion or 0.4 percent to $201.8 billion. Inventories increased less than $0.1 billion or 0.1 percent to $25.5 billion. Revised April Data – Revised seasonally adjusted April figures for all manufacturing industries, based on updated seasonal adjustment models, were: new orders, $586.1 billion (revised from $588.2 billion); shipments, $589.1 billion (revised from $590.2 billion); unfilled orders, $1,399.7 billion (revised from $1,400.6 billion) and total inventories, $858.4 billion (revised from $858.3 billion).
