The U.S. Census Bureau announces the April advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in April, up two consecutive months, increased $3.1 billion or 1.1 percent to $283.0 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 3.3 percent March increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.2 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 0.6 percent. Transportation equipment, also up two consecutive months, drove the increase, $3.5 billion or 3.7 percent to $97.6 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in April, down two of the last three months, decreased $2.0 billion or 0.7 percent to $277.7 billion. This followed a 0.7 percent March increase. Transportation equipment, down three of the last four months, led the decrease, $1.6 billion or 1.8 percent to $87.5 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in April, up four of the last five months, increased $10.5 billion or 0.8 percent to $1,291.5 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent March increase. Transportation equipment, also up four of the last five months, led the increase, $10.2 billion or 1.3 percent to $792.2 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in April, up four of the last five months, increased $5.2 billion or 1.0 percent to $521.9 billion. This followed a 1.0 percent March decrease. Transportation equipment, up three of the last four months, led the increase, $5.0 billion or 3.2 percent to $164.1 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in April decreased $0.4 billion or 0.5 percent to $84.9 billion. Shipments decreased $1.5 billion or 1.8 percent to $80.1 billion. Unfilled orders increased $4.8 billion or 0.6 percent to $740.1 billion. Inventories increased $5.0 billion or 2.3 percent to $225.7 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in April increased $4.9 billion or 36.1 percent to $18.7 billion. Shipments increased $0.5 billion or 4.1 percent to $13.4 billion. Unfilled orders increased $5.3 billion or 2.6 percent to $210.8 billion. Inventories increased $0.1 billion or 0.6 percent to $24.0 billion. Revised and Recently Benchmarked March Data – Revised seasonally adjusted March figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $575.0 billion (revised from $573.8 billion); shipments, $574.8 billion (revised from $575.0 billion); unfilled orders, $1,281.0 billion (revised from $1,279.7 billion) and total inventories, $852.6 billion (revised from $853.7 billion).
