The U.S. Census Bureau announces the April advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in April, up three consecutive months, increased $1.9 billion or 0.7 percent to $284.1 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 0.8 percent March increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.4 percent. Excluding defense, new orders were virtually unchanged. Transportation equipment, also up three consecutive months, led the increase, $1.1 billion or 1.2 percent to $96.2 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in April, up three consecutive months, increased $3.4 billion or 1.2 percent to $285.7 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent March increase. Transportation equipment, also up three consecutive months, led the increase, $3.1 billion or 3.4 percent to $93.0 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in April, up forty-five consecutive months, increased $3.1 billion or 0.2 percent to $1,401.0 billion. This followed a 0.3 percent March increase. Transportation equipment, up forty-two of the last forty-three months, drove the increase, $3.2 billion or 0.4 percent to $906.7 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in April, up four of the last five months, increased $0.6 billion or 0.1 percent to $528.5 billion. This followed a virtually unchanged March decrease. Transportation equipment, up ten of the last eleven months, drove the increase, $0.6 billion or 0.4 percent to $170.9 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in April decreased $1.3 billion or 1.5 percent to $85.6 billion. Shipments increased $1.9 billion or 2.4 percent to $82.1 billion. Unfilled orders increased $3.5 billion or 0.4 percent to $855.7 billion. Inventories increased $0.7 billion or 0.3 percent to $231.4 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in April increased $1.8 billion or 15.2 percent to $13.6 billion. Shipments increased $0.3 billion or 2.5 percent to $14.4 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.8 billion or 0.4 percent to $202.8 billion. Inventories increased $0.2 billion or 0.9 percent to $25.5 billion. Revised March Data – Revised seasonally adjusted March figures for all manufacturing industries, based on updated seasonal adjustment models, were: new orders, $584.0 billion (revised from $584.2 billion); shipments, $584.2 billion (revised from $583.9 billion); unfilled orders, $1,398.0 billion (revised from $1,398.5 billion) and total inventories, $857.4 billion (revised from $857.8 billion).
