The U.S. Census Bureau announces the March advance report on durable goods manufacturers’ shipments, inventories and orders: New Orders – New orders for manufactured durable goods in March, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $8.6 billion or 3.2 percent to $276.4 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This followed a 1.2 percent February decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.3 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 3.5 percent. Transportation equipment, also up following two consecutive monthly decreases, led the increase, $8.1 billion or 9.1 percent to $97.4 billion. Shipments – Shipments of manufactured durable goods in March, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $2.9 billion or 1.1 percent to $277.0 billion. This followed a 0.8 percent February decrease. Transportation equipment, also up following two consecutive monthly decreases, drove the increase, $3.3 billion or 3.7 percent to $93.3 billion. Unfilled Orders – Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in March, up thirty of the last thirty-one months, increased $4.6 billion or 0.4 percent to $1,160.2 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent February decrease. Transportation equipment, up twenty-two of the last twenty-three months, led the increase, $4.1 billion or 0.6 percent to $688.0 billion. Inventories – Inventories of manufactured durable goods in March, down two of the last three months, decreased $4.4 billion or 0.9 percent to $488.8 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent February increase. Transportation equipment, also down two of the last three months, drove the decrease, $4.4 billion or 2.8 percent to $154.1 billion. Capital Goods – Nondefense new orders for capital goods in March increased $8.4 billion or 10.4 percent to $89.6 billion. Shipments increased $3.0 billion or 3.6 percent to $85.8 billion. Unfilled orders increased $3.8 billion or 0.6 percent to $666.1 billion. Inventories decreased $3.7 billion or 1.7 percent to $215.2 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in March decreased $0.1 billion or 0.5 percent to $14.5 billion. Shipments decreased $0.1 billion or 0.8 percent to $14.5 billion. Unfilled orders decreased less than $0.1 billion or virtually unchanged to $188.9 billion. Inventories decreased $0.1 billion or 0.4 percent to $23.1 billion. Revised February Data – Revised seasonally adjusted February figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $534.1 billion (revised from $536.4 billion); shipments, $540.3 billion (revised from $542.8 billion); unfilled orders, $1,155.6 billion (unchanged) and total inventories, $805.8 billion (revised from $806.3 billion).
