(by Rye Druzin, www.pipe-logix.com) US line pipe: Raw materials drive prices up – Line pipe prices were bolstered this month by higher steel prices and some supply tightness. The Argus Pipe Logix US line pipe index rose to $2,555/ short ton (st) for April, a $42/st increase from the prior month. The domestic line pipe index increased by $40/st to $2,819/st, while the import index jumped by $45/st to $2,291/st. Prices were up across almost all products, with prices for larger diameter domestic 18-24in X42 seamless notably declining as prices were reset lower. Some domestic X65 seamless prices also declined on pricing resets. The NASPD Distributors index rose by three points in April to a more positive reading of 76. For the second consecutive month nearly all respondents reported expectations that prices will continue to rise, with the price outlook flat at a positive reading of 96. Nearly 60pc of respondents said their inventories are shrinking, indicating less available supply, while nearly 40pc said there is a shortage of line pipe, with nearly half saying supply and demand are in balance and the remainder reporting a moderate oversupply.
