(by Rye Druzin, www.pipe-logix.com) US steel tariffs nudged line pipe prices up in April but at a slower pace than a month ago. US line pipe prices rose to $2,605/short ton (st) in April, a $69/st uptick from March. Tariffs on steel imports remained a primary factor supporting line pipe prices. Some distributors said current prices already take the 25% import tax into account and do not expect tariffs to continue raising prices. Import prices rose by 2.7%% to $2,281/st in April. Imported ERW line pipe rose by 2.9pc to $1,693/st, and the seamless import average price increased by 2.5% to $2,868/st. Domestic line pipe prices inched up by 2.7% to $2,929/ st. The domestic seamless average price rose by 3.3% to $3,799/st, and the domestic ERW average price rose by 1.7% to $2,058/st. The distributor’s sentiment index fell by 23 points to 51. Most distributors expect prices to stay the same in May. The US benchmark oil price yesterday fell to $58.21/bl, down from April’s average of $63.20/bl. Natural gas fell by 17% to $3.43/mmBtu in April. US hot-rolled coil fell to $930/ st last week, down by $20/st from a month earlier. The average US drilling rig count for April was 586, down by six from March.
