AISI Press Release on Latest U.S. Imports of Steel Products – August 2025

(American Iron and Steel Institute) Finished Import Market Share Estimated at 20 Percent in July – Based on the Commerce Department’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that steel import permit applications for the month of July totaled 2,163,000 net tons (NT)*. This was a 3.9% decrease from the 2,250,000 permit tons recorded in June and a 4.0% decrease from the June final imports total of 2,252,000. Import permit tonnage for finished steel in July was 1,622,000, down 2.6% from the final imports total of 1,665,000 in June. For the first seven months of 2025 (including July SIMA permits and June final imports), total and finished steel imports were 16,789,000 NT and 12,431,000 NT, down 5.5% and 9.4%, respectively, from the same period in 2024. The estimated finished steel import market share in July was 18% and is 20% year-to-date (YTD). Steel imports with large increases in July permits vs. June final imports include sheets and strip all other metallic coated (up 87%), cut lengths plates (up 59%), heavy structural shapes (up 27%), tin plate (up 23%) and mechanical tubing (up 20%). Products with significant year-to-date (YTD) increases vs. the same period in 2024 include tin plate (up 58%), stainless pipe and tube (up 56%), line pipe (up 28%), wire rods (up 20%) and oil country goods (up 18%). In July, the largest steel import permit applications were for Brazil (308,000 NT, down 27% from June final), South Korea (286,000 NT, up 58%), Canada (277,000 NT, down 20%), Mexico (247,000 NT, up 39%) and Taiwan (139,000 NT, up 17%). Through the first seven months of 2025, the largest suppliers were Canada (3,084,000 NT, down 23%), Brazil (2,890,000 NT, down 1%) and Mexico (2,020,000 NT, down 5%). *Note that import permits data are counts of tonnages requested in applications for licenses to import steel products and are not actual import volumes. For a number of reasons, permit tonnages may understate or overstate actual import volumes for the month, preliminary estimates of which will be available later this month.

Personal Information that Pipe Exchange collects

In the course of signing up for the Pipe Exchange e-publication and/or contacting Pipe Exchange via the “Contact Us” section of the Website, you may choose to provide personal information (e.g., your name, phone number, email address, etc.). We will explicitly indicate the fields designated for mandatory completion. If you do not enter the requisite data in the mandatory fields, you will not be able to receive the e-publication and/or complete the relevant contact form.  It’s important that you understand there is no requirement by law for you to provide Pipe Exchange with your personal details – the information you share with us is entirely voluntary.

 

We request that you provide Pipe Exchange with complete, accurate and correct details. Your failure to do so will likely result in Pipe Exchange being unable to contact you about your inquiries into our Services.

Children’s Online Privacy Information

Pipe Exchange does not knowingly collect personal information from minors who are under the age of 16 through the Website and/or the Services thereon.
