(American Iron and Steel Institute) Finished Import Market Share Estimated at 20 Percent in April – Based on the Commerce Department’s most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that steel import permit applications for the month of April totaled 2,208,000 net tons (NT)*. This was an 8.1% decrease from the 2,403,000 permit tons recorded in March and an 11.7% decrease from the March final imports total of 2,501,000. Import permit tonnage for finished steel in April was 1,659,000, down 9.0% from the final imports total of 1,823,000 in March. For the first four months of 2025 (including April SIMA permits and March final imports), total and finished steel imports were 10,020,000 NT and 7,415,000 NT, down 3.1% and 4.4%, respectively, from the same period in 2024. The estimated finished steel import market share in April was 20% and is 22% year-to-date (YTD). Steel imports with large increases in April permits vs. March final imports include oil country goods (up 36%), tin plate (up 34%), black plate (up 26%), light shapes bars (up 16%) and wire rods (up 12%). Products with significant year-to-date (YTD) increases vs. the same period in 2024 include tin plate (up 79%), line pipe (up 62%), oil country goods (up 19%), wire rods (up 16%) and heavy structural shapes (up 15%). In April, the largest steel import permit applications were for Canada (399,000 NT, down 19% from March final), Brazil (368,000 NT, down 14%), South Korea (224,000 NT, down 12%), Mexico (205,000 NT, down 47%) and Germany (110,000 NT, down 5%). Through the first four months of 2025, the largest suppliers were Canada (2,024,000 NT, down 14%), Brazil (1,828,000 NT, up 4%) and Mexico (1,344,000 NT, down 6%). *Note that import permits data are counts of tonnages requested in applications for licenses to import steel products and are not actual import volumes. For a number of reasons, permit tonnages may understate or overstate actual import volumes for the month, preliminary estimates of which will be available later this month.
