(by Kurt Minnich, www.pipe-logix.com) Line pipe prices jumped 5.2% in December. In particular, ERW prices were up 12.5% for domestic products and up 10.7% for import products. Seamless prices increased slightly, up 1.9% and 0.7% for domestic and imports, respectively. That was the 3rd consecutive month of increases in the Pipe Logix Index with a cumulative increase of 7.9% since September, though the index was down 6% compared to a year ago. Distributors sentiment edged higher in December with the NASPD Index at 66, which continues to indicate an expanding market for domestic line pipe pricing. Five of the seven components to the NASPD Index were expanding indicators with Inventory Direction being the strongest. Reported supply of line pipe over the trailing 12 months is down 59% compared to the same period a year ago and the estimate for November suggests import volumes were just 34,000 tons, the lowest in 2020. While the Baker Hughes rig count has been slowly increasing and oil and gas prices holding mostly steady, steel HRC prices have doubled in five months to average $924/ton in December. The details are in the report.
