Market Highlights:
Natural gas storage
Net injections into storage totaled 36 Bcf for the week ending August 7, compared with the five-year (2021–2025) average net injections of 33 Bcf and last year’s net injections of 49 Bcf during the same week. Working natural gas stocks totaled 3,153 Bcf as of Friday, August 7, 2026, according to EIA estimates. Stocks were 198 Bcf (7%) more than the five-year average and 25 Bcf (1%) lower than last year at this time. The average rate of injections into storage is 12% higher than the five-year average so far in the refill season (April through October). If the rate of injections into storage matched the five-year average of 9.4 Bcf/d for the remainder of the refill season, the total inventory would be 3,951 Bcf on October 31, which is 198 Bcf higher than the five-year average of 3,753 Bcf for that time of year.
Natural gas prices
The Henry Hub price increased $0.22/MMBtu to $2.82/MMBtu yesterday. The August month-to-date average price of $2.69/MMBtu is $0.22/MMBtu less than last August’s price. Warmer-than-normal temperatures continued this week across most of the country, following reporting that July was the hottest month on record. Total demand increased by 3.9 Bcf/d (5%), led by a 3.4 Bcf/d (8%) increase in power sector demand, according to S&P Global Energy. Total U.S. natural gas supply remained largely unchanged from last week, averaging 116.7 Bcf/d, with dry production also remaining flat at 110.9 Bcf/d (less than 1% change for both), according to S&P Global Energy. Net imports from Canada also remained relatively unchanged at 5.7 Bcf/d.
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
For the week ending August 12: The LNG-carrying capacity of vessels departing U.S. ports was 134 Bcf, up 15 Bcf from the previous week. Thirty-six LNG vessels left U.S. ports, up five vessels from the previous week. Eight vessels departed from Sabine Pass, seven from Corpus Christi, six from Plaquemines, five from Freeport, four from Cameron, three from Calcasieu Pass, two from Elba Island, and one from Cove Point.
